Core Competencies for Public Health

Core competencies are the essential knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for the practice of public health. Core competencies can improve the practice of public health by providing a foundation for enhanced education and professional development. Their common language and values support collaboration and partnership development. They also provide an opportunity to improve recognition and understanding of public health. Skills Enhancement for Public Health

The Skills Enhancement for Public Health on-line learning modules are offered through the Internet to public health practitioners across Canada. This continuing education opportunity helps public health practitioners to strengthen their knowledge and skills and to work toward meeting the core competencies for public health, thereby improving public health practice.

The Skills Online program hasalso created two self-directed modules (Introduction to Public Health in Canada & Introduction to Literature Searching).Anyone can take these modules and there are no prerequisites. Learners can register for the self-directed modules at any time

Knowledge Translation Learning Modules

Three knowledge translation learning modules are now freely available from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Incorporating the Core Competencies

The Ontario Public Health Association has developed several resources facilitate the incorporation of core competencies in the work of public health practitioners:

The Tatamagouche Centre

The Tatamagouche Centre offers over 60 residential programs a year designed for personal and societal transformation. Set on 15 rolling acres by the sea, programs range from how to work effectively with groups, to body, mind, spirit workshops to engaging diverse groups.


Lakehead University 

The Master of Public Health Program at Lakehead University was established in 2002, the first such program in Canada. This practicum-based degree offers the option of completing a Specialization in Nursing,  that may include Nurse Practitioner electives. The program is delivered using a unique blend of on-campus and distance technology: content is delivered using the University's online distance education course management system (WebCT), and web conferencing.  pdf
